Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that the United States is seeking ways for Ukraine and Russia to de-escalate the war over the winter as broader peace talks resume, APA reports.
Zelenskyy told Axios that Russian President Vladimir Putin could be pressured by Washington to de-escalate the war, arguing that he would not want to upset US President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy also said Putin could seek to give Trump a "diplomatic win" ahead of the US midterm elections. Commenting on the diplomatic visit by US top envoys, Zelenskyy said they conveyed to Kyiv that "the Russians are ready to negotiate."
The Ukrainian president underlined that while both Moscow and Kyiv hold different interests, Washington is focused on avoiding a repeat of previous winters marked by Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy also noted that the US is in favor of a separate "winter package" for Ukraine that would provide air defense and energy support.
