Farid Shafiyev: Importance of safe routes through Azerbaijan is growing amid regional conflicts

Considering the existence of two active conflicts to the north and south of the South Caucasus — the Russia-Ukraine war and the Iran-US confrontation — the importance of transporting cargo and ensuring safe routes is increasing further, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center for the Analysis of International Relations and Multiculturalism, Farid Shafiyev said during a roundtable discussion in Baku titled “European-Azerbaijani relations: assessment of historical experience and future directions of cooperation,” APA reports.

“I think the European Union will become more actively involved in this area within the framework of its partnership with Central Asian countries and Azerbaijan,” Farid Shafiyev noted.

He also touched upon the issue of landmines: “Unfortunately, international assistance to Azerbaijan in the field of demining remains very limited. Looking at the overall figures, we see that this assistance accounts for only 4 percent. We need to look at the destruction caused by the conflict in the region. The consequences of the war are evident not on the territory of Armenia, but on the territory of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan has suffered serious destruction and therefore needs significant assistance. I would also like to note that next week we will hold a larger conference together with the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.”

Farid Shafiyev said that a number of experts from European Union member states and other countries will participate in the conference: “At the event, we will discuss the overall security situation in the South Caucasus. It will also be interesting for us to hear views and proposals from representatives of the diplomatic corps and experts in this field.”
