Nissan to axe a quarter of workforce in UK

Baku. Nijat Mustafayev – APA-Economics. Japanese car giant Nissan is to cut 1,200 jobs in Sunderland due to a sales slump caused by the global economic slowdown.
The company, which sent workers at the site home early before Christmas to cope with the economic downturn.
Around 5,000 workers are employed in Sunderland, one of the biggest employers in the region.
Nissan sold 66,336 new cars in the UK in 2008 - only 0.14% fewer than in 2007.
A year ago 800 jobs at the Sunderland plant were created in response to demand for its new Qashqai model.
But in December, the firm halted manufacturing of two of its models and sent production staff home on full pay.
