The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is an important cooperation mechanism contributing to the practical implementation of the goals and objectives of the UN, President of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Thongloun Sisoulith said during his speech at the 7th CICA Summit, APA reports.

The President stated that Laos’s accession to CICA demonstrates his country’s commitment to promoting peace and cooperation through dialogue and confidence-building.

“Becoming a full member of CICA is not only a matter of national pride for us, but also a major mission and responsibility in terms of contributing to strengthening trust, preserving peace and security, and promoting cooperation for sustainable development and common prosperity in Asia and throughout the world,” Thongloun Sisoulith emphasized.

The President described CICA as an important cooperation mechanism contributing to the practical implementation of the goals and objectives of the UN.

Thongloun Sisoulith also stated that his country attaches particular importance to the development of regional transport and logistics links. He noted that the Laos-China railway, commissioned in 2021, serves the goal of transforming the country into a regional transport and logistics hub.

“In the future, we aim to cooperate on extending this important railway network toward Central Asia and the broader Eurasian region, using Azerbaijan as a gateway in this process,” the President said.

He also emphasized that digital transformation and sustainable development are key drivers of economic growth. Laos supports reducing the digital divide, developing e-commerce and strengthening cooperation in cybersecurity within CICA.

Touching upon the challenges posed by climate change, the President stated that they are ready to cooperate with CICA member states in accelerating the transition to green energy, sustainable management of water resources and environmental protection.

In conclusion, Thongloun Sisoulith emphasized that they support the long-term action plan aimed at transforming CICA from a traditional consultative forum into a full-fledged intergovernmental organization with its own Charter.
