Istanbul hosts conference of European Ministers of Justice

Baku. Shahriyar Alizade - APA. Council of Europe in cooperation with the Turkish government organized the next meeting of the European ministers of justice in Istanbul. The conference was on the theme “Modernising justice in the third millennium”, APA reports quoting the press service of Justice Ministry. The delegation led by Minister of Justice, Chairman of Court-Law Council Fikrat Mammadov represented Azerbaijan in this conference. Transparent and efficient justice, application of information and communication technologies, the reform of penitentiary system, the situation concerning European prisons were discussed at the event.

About 300 representatives, including European Ministers of Justice and many other officials from influential organizations attended this conference. Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buquicchio and Turkish Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin made a keynote speech.

Addressing the conference Azerbaijani Justice Minister underlined the importance of efficient justice, reforms carried out in Azerbaijan in this field, establishment of new courts, application of advanced technologies, as well as doubling of the judges. The attention of participants was drawn to Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno Karabakh and the occupation of 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories.

Four resolutions were adopted at the end of the forum. An agreement was reached to hold the 31st conference of European Justice Ministers in Austria in 2012.

Azerbaijani Justice Minister met with European Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg during the conference. They exchanged views on the protection of human rights, functioning of the European Court and other issues.

Note that the conference has been held permanently since 1961 and was organized in Turkey after 20 years.
