Lithuania will discuss with NATO allowing drones that violate its airspace to be shot down without visual confirmation, LRT reported, citing Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius.
He said the procedures governing how NATO fighter jets deployed on rotation at Lithuania’s Zokniai airbase engage intruding drones would be reviewed.
“I have instructed that consultations with NATO begin to review the response procedure for drones entering our airspace. I hope one month will be sufficient,” the prime minister said.
Sinkevičius suggested that NATO could leave the determination of responses to airspace violations to member states’ national legislation.
Under current peacetime procedures, a fighter pilot cannot open fire without visually confirming that the object violating the airspace is an unmanned aerial vehicle.
