A poll in Germany’s Bavaria has found that 57% of respondents support Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s immediate resignation, Münchner Merkur reports.
The survey was conducted by polling institute GMS for broadcaster Sat.1 Bayern.
Respondents were asked whether Merz should step down in light of the governing coalition’s failures in reform policy and regional election results.
While 57% supported his resignation, 32% opposed it.
Supporters of Bavaria’s Christian Social Union (CSU) were also divided: 50% favoured Merz’s resignation, while 42% wanted him to remain in office.
The findings were released ahead of the CSU’s upcoming national party congress.
The poll put support for the CSU in Bavaria at 37%, followed by Alternative for Germany (AfD) at 22% and the Greens at 15%.
The survey covered 1,011 people between October 14 and 19.
