US Vice President JD Vance has said he opposes Ukraine joining NATO.
Vance made the remarks in an interview with 2WAY.
“Ukraine is not a member of NATO. I don’t think they should be a member of NATO,” he said.
Vance also stopped short of describing Ukraine as a US ally. He said Kyiv was a partner in certain respects, but the two countries’ interests did not always align.
He cited Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries as an example.
“Do I think it is right for Ukraine to strike Russian diesel production facilities and thereby raise energy prices for Americans? No,” Vance said.
He added that Washington would continue cooperating with Ukraine in various areas, but Kyiv should stop attacking Russia’s energy infrastructure.
“As far as I know, we do not have a formal alliance with Ukraine,” the vice president said.
