Despite the State Customs Committee repeatedly detecting cases of smuggling precious metals and stones into the country and holding those responsible accountable, some individuals still continue to engage in such actions, Committee told APA-Economics.

An attempt to smuggle a particularly large amount of gold products illegally was prevented based on operational and search measures at the Main Customs Department for Air Transport.

Following the analysis of the information received, the hand luggage of an Azerbaijani citizen arriving on the Istanbul–Baku flight was subjected to customs inspection in the customs control zone of the “Terminal 1” customs post.

During the inspection, a particularly large amount of gold products worth 2 million 440 thousand 344 manats, with a total mass of 10 kilograms 883.82 grams, and a 3-carat diamond weighing 0.60 grams were discovered inside the suitcase, which were not declared to the customs authorities.

A criminal case has been initiated in connection with the fact in the Investigation Department of the Main Operational-Investigative Department of the State Customs Committee under Article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. It was determined that the mentioned gold products were brought from Dubai to Istanbul, and from there to Baku by another person in order to hide the trace.

Currently, complex operational-investigative measures are being continued to identify and hold accountable all persons involved in the mentioned fact, as well as those who created the conditions for this incident.

The State Customs Committee once again states that such illegal actions are unacceptable and will be prevented in the most serious way, and the persons who committed these actions will be held accountable.
