Aleko Elisashvili, one of the leaders of the opposition coalition "Strong Georgia," who was accused of attempting to commit a terrorist act in Tbilisi, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison, APA's local bureau reports.
The verdict was announced by the Tbilisi City Court.
During his final statement, the politician used insulting language toward government officials and was removed from the courtroom on the judge's orders.
Note that Aleko Elisashvili was detained on November 29 last year. He unlawfully entered the Tbilisi City Court building, poured gasoline over items and documents in the court registry office, and attempted to start a fire. The opposition politician resisted court bailiffs who tried to stop him by using the firearm he was carrying.
The politician was charged with attempting to commit a terrorist act resulting in grave consequences. This criminal offense is punishable by 10 to 15 years of imprisonment.
