The UK is on track this year for the highest number of heat-related deaths since records began, according to estimates by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), BBC reports.

In a preliminary assessment, it said there were an estimated 2,877 heat-related deaths during the May and June heatwaves, almost double the figure for the whole of last year.

An estimated 753 deaths were associated with the 24-27 May heatwave and a further 2,124 with the one from 21-28 June. Definitive figures are expected in early 2027.

Both spells broke Met Office UK monthly temperature records, with 35.1C (95.2F) recorded at Kew Gardens on 26 May and 38.0C recorded at Lingwood, Norfolk on 26 June.

The current record for heat-related deaths was set in 2022, when 2,985 deaths were recorded.
