Armenia imposes temporary ban on tomato paste imports, including from other Eurasian Economic Union countries

Armenia has imposed a temporary ban on tomato paste imports, News.am reports.

This decision was made at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting of the government.

The restriction will be in effect for a period of six months.

The ban also applies to the specified product from the other Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) countries.

It is noted that this decision is due to the need to ensure a level playing field for businesses importing tomato paste and tomato paste producers using local raw materials, as well as to regulate the tomato procurement process.

It is also noted that due to restrictions on the export and transit of quarantine goods of Armenian origin, the exports of fruits and vegetables, including greenhouse tomatoes, have decreased. As a result, a significant portion of exported greenhouse tomatoes is now sold on the Armenian domestic market, which leads to a decrease in demand for tomatoes grown in the open field.

It is expected that as a result of this decision, sales of locally produced tomato paste will increase, demand for tomatoes will increase, and will ensure the procurement of the grown crop in Armenia.
