Ukrainian long-range drone strikes have disabled more than 30% of Russia's operational oil refining capacity and about 45% of its nominal refining capacity, the Financial Times reported, citing its analysis of satellite imagery, thermal monitoring data and assessments by the Frontelligence Insight analytical group.
According to the report, Ukrainian drones are increasingly targeting critical technological units rather than fuel storage tanks, focusing on equipment essential to refinery operations that is difficult and time-consuming to replace.
The Tuapse oil refinery was among the hardest-hit facilities. The analysis also found that damage at major refineries in Omsk, Moscow and Tuapse remains visible months after the attacks, with some storage tanks, pumping stations and pipelines yet to be restored.
Experts cited by the newspaper said strikes on key processing equipment have a much longer-lasting impact than attacks on fuel storage facilities, significantly reducing refineries' operational capacity.
The Financial Times added that although Russia has strengthened air defenses around its refineries, Ukraine's wave-style drone attacks continue to penetrate defenses and inflict further damage.
