The European Union is contemplating a delay in the implementation of its initial counter-measures against the United States in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum, APA reports.
European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic indicated that the EU might postpone the imposition of tariffs until mid-April to allow for further negotiations and consultations with member states.
Initially, the European Commission had planned to re-impose tariffs on 4.5 billion euros ($4.9 billion) worth of U.S. products starting April 1, with an additional 18 billion euros of U.S. goods targeted for April 13.
Sefcovic, speaking at a European Parliament hearing, mentioned that aligning the timing of these measures could facilitate simultaneous consultations with EU member states and provide additional time for dialogue with American counterparts.
