Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has threatened to seize tankers belonging to the European Union, he stated in an interview with local state television, APA reports.
He shared his views on the right granted to EU countries to detain Russian merchant vessels and sell the cargo aboard tankers as part of the bloc's 21st package of sanctions against Russia adopted in July.
The minister rejected the EU's term "shadow fleet" and stressed that it has no basis in international law.
He accused Brussels of placing its decisions above international law.
"The Russian President stated very clearly and calmly that we will respond to this banditry and robbery," Lavrov noted.
He added that the targets would be chosen by Russia.
The Foreign Minister warned that his country, in turn, would seize the tankers of those countries and that this would be carried out by Russia "at the necessary and appropriate place."
