"Despite having less time for preparations compared to other countries, Azerbaijan's Presidency of COP29 has made significant efforts to engage all stakeholders," Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan, said at a Parliamentary Meeting organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis within the framework of COP29.
The Speaker expressed regret that, during these preparations, Azerbaijan has faced biased and unfounded accusations, double standards, and disinformation campaigns from some states and media platforms: “It is clear that some forget the power of dialogue, cooperation, and solidarity in the face of common challenges. On the other hand, they still fail to understand that, due to its critical importance, the issue of climate change cannot be used as a platform to promote narrow interests and politically motivated ambitions.”
Sahiba Gafarova emphasized that despite these unpleasant developments, COP29 has successfully commenced its work and continues to engage all stakeholders: “Our Parliamentary Meeting takes place after the World Leaders Climate Action Summit and a series of other important events and meetings. The 14 initiatives put forward by the COP29 Presidency and the Action Agenda are the result of an inclusive process, demonstrating a comprehensive approach and bringing everyone together in global climate action.
As a result of the ongoing discussions, some important outcomes have already been achieved.”
