A roundtable discussion on the topic “The first heart transplant in the Caucasus: a historic achievement of Azerbaijan’s healthcare and future prospects” was held with the joint organization of the Ministry of Health and the Azerbaijan Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, APA reports.
The scientific and practical significance of the transplant surgery and its future prospects were discussed at the roundtable with the participation of relevant institutions and healthcare specialists.
Delivering the opening speech, Chairman of the Milli Majlis Healthcare Committee, academician Ahliman Amiraslanov, stated that the number of people in Azerbaijan who need a heart transplant is high: “The main issue in this matter is finding a donor. After the first heart transplant was performed in Azerbaijan, we saw an increase in the number of people who want to become heart donors.”
Deputy Minister of Health Nadir Zeynalov said that transplant surgeries in the country are being carried out in a systematized manner: “The issue of digitizing the system is on the agenda. Certain work has been done in this area, but it has not yet been completed.”
According to Yegana Abbasova, Chair of the Board of the Ministry of Health’s Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation, the number of people in Azerbaijan willing to become donors has exceeded 1,200 after the first deceased-donor organ transplantation.
Rashad Mammadaliyev, who underwent the first heart transplant in the Caucasus, expressed his gratitude to those involved in his operation and then called on everyone to make use of organ donation.
Rashad Mammadaliyev's parent, Farida Huseynova, thanked everyone and said that her son underwent surgery without waiting in line because they accepted the transplant from a cadaver donor.
Speaking at the roundtable, Chairman of the Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, Professor Kamran Musayev, noted that awareness-raising efforts should be carried out in order to increase the number of transplant operations.
