Authorities report that the fires started on Friday evening near Tignale, west of Lake Garda, an area currently crowded with holidaymakers, RTL Today reports.
Emergency services say that the flames spread rapidly through the mountainous terrain above the lake, forcing the evacuation of more than 200 people, including a significant number of tourists.
Firefighters are battling to bring the blaze under control, deploying firefighting aircraft and helicopters to contain the advancing fire fronts.
However, despite their efforts, progress has been limited. Officials told the dpa news agency that at present, operations are focused on containing the fire fronts and protecting several houses in the area.
The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Lake Garda is one of Italy’s most popular holiday destinations, attracting thousands of tourists each summer, including many from Luxembourg.
Much of Italy, like other parts of Europe, is currently enduring a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C. Nearly all major cities are under ‘red alert’ due to the acute health risks posed by the extreme heat.
The country’s largest river, the Po, has seen its water levels drop dramatically. Forecasters expect the high temperatures to persist until at least the middle of the month.
