Türkiye restricts ship passages to the Black Sea

Türkiye has begun restricting the passage of commercial vessels to the Black Sea following an increase in attacks on ships in the region, APA reports.

Bloomberg writes that, according to officials familiar with the matter, this is related to concerns within the Turkish government over the increase in attacks in the Black Sea on vessels belonging to or linked to Russia and Ukraine.

According to the report, the General Directorate of Maritime Security said that several vessels heading to the port of Novorossiysk, one of Russia's main oil and grain export hubs, are currently not being granted permission to pass through the straits. Some applications require additional time for further review.

Thus, Türkiye is reportedly tightening controls on commercial shipping from the Dardanelles Strait to the Black Sea.

No official statement has been made on how long the restrictions will remain in place or whether they will apply to all commercial vessels or only to certain routes.
