Drones reportedly spotted over German base where Patriot systems are repaired

Suspicious drone flights have been reported over the German town of Mechernich, home to a key Bundeswehr facility where Patriot air defence systems are serviced and repaired, German TV news service Tagesschau said, European Pravda reports.

Mechernich, located in Germany's Eifel region southwest of Bonn, is home to a major Bundeswehr logistics facility: a high-security underground complex, situated around 130 m below ground which stores military equipment and spare parts across 30,000 sq m, making it a critical part of the German armed forces' logistics network.

But that is not all: Bundeswehr experts responsible for maintaining and repairing Patriot air defence systems also work here. The facility, known within the German armed forces as the "Patriot-Werft" ("Patriot workshop"), is believed to be the only one of its kind in Europe.

Recent drone activity has caused concern among German security authorities, according to WDR, NDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung. Staff from a security firm reportedly detected six drone flights between 22:00 and 05:00 during the night leading up to Friday 1 August.

During the most recent sighting, police officers from the Euskirchen District Police Authority – who had already been alerted – are reported to have been on the scene and to have also witnessed at least one drone flying overhead. One drone is even said to have circled briefly above the emergency services, according to a confidential police report.

The report also states that Bundeswehr military police observed the incident from a distance of around 40 m. Their early assessment suggests the drone was likely a Fly-380 VTOL model, which has a wingspan of about 3.8 m, a range of up to 400 km, a top speed of 150 km/h, and can carry a payload of more than 10 kg.

It is not yet clear who was behind the flights over Mechernich. Drones of this type are used for surveying, mapping, border surveillance and transporting goods to hard-to-reach areas. However, investigators reportedly found no evidence that the incident was caused by a civilian surveying drone that had strayed into the area by mistake.

Police are investigating suspected unauthorised surveillance of military facilities, weapons systems and restricted areas. Germany's Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) and the Joint Drone Defence Centre in Berlin are also involved in the investigation.
