The number of people in Azerbaijan willing to become donors has exceeded 1,200 following the country’s first deceased-donor organ transplantation, said Yegana Abbasova, Chair of the Board of the Ministry of Health’s Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation, at the roundtable discussion titled “The first heart transplant in the Caucasus: a historic achievement of Azerbaijan’s healthcare and future prospects,” APA reports.
She noted that a legal framework was first created for the Coordination Center for Organ Donation and Transplantation: “For this purpose, the regulations of a unified information database were established. All hospitals performing transplants and the list of individuals initially awaiting a donor were included in this database.”
