In Azerbaijan, the memory of those who perished in the Aktau plane crash has been honored with a minute of silence, APA reports.
At 12:00 Baku time, transportation and pedestrian movement across the country came to a halt, car horns sounded, and ships, metro, and overground trains signaled.
In Baku, other cities and regions, as well as at Azerbaijan's diplomatic missions abroad, state flags were lowered.
Recall that today is a day of mourning in Azerbaijan. By an Order signed by President Ilham Aliyev, a national day of mourning was declared on December 26 in connection with the loss of many lives in the crash of the Embraer 190 passenger plane operating the Baku-Grozny route on December 25.
On December 25, an Embraer 190 aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, flight J2-8243 on the Baku-Grozny route, diverted towards the city of Aktau due to the necessity of an emergency landing and crashed near Aktau. The plane carried 67 people, including 5 crew members and 62 passengers. As a result of the crash, 38 people lost their lives, while 29 survived.
The causes of the crash are under investigation.
Following the instructions of President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan, a state commission led by Prime Minister Ali Asadov has been established to investigate the reasons behind the crash. Additionally, a delegation headed by Azerbaijan's Minister of Emergency Situations and the Minister of Digital Development and Transport headed to Kazakhstan in connection with the tragic incident.
President Ilham Aliyev, who was en route to the Russian Federation to participate in the informal CIS Heads of State Summit in St. Petersburg, was informed of the plane crash while in Russian airspace, and the President immediately ordered the return of his flight. Upon landing, President Ilham Aliyev convened a meeting at Heydar Aliyev International Airport regarding the incident.
