Jews living in various countries around the world are celebrating the arrival of the year 5787 according to the Jewish calendar — Rosh Hashanah, APA’s northern bureau reports.
Rosh Hashanah, in addition to marking the Jewish New Year, is considered a period of spiritual reflection, looking back on the past and doing good deeds.
Pisakh Isakov, chairman of the Religious Community of Mountain Jews of the Red Settlement, said that the period of spiritual renewal, which begins on the first day of the month of Tishrei, lasts for 10 days:
“Every person recalls the days of the past year, reflects on the mistakes they made knowingly or unknowingly, prays to God and asks for forgiveness for their sins. Those who have fallen out reconcile and wish each other well. This period concludes with the Yom Kippur holiday.”
The community chairman expressed gratitude to the country’s leadership for the conditions created for religious communities in Azerbaijan.
“We are happy that Jews in Azerbaijan can openly and freely observe their customs and traditions. President Ilham Aliyev congratulates us on our holiday every year and highly appreciates the role of Jews in the development of our country. Therefore, on behalf of all Mountain Jews, I express my gratitude to the head of state,” Pisakh Isakov noted.
Yavushva Simanduyev, chairman of the Council of Elders of the Red Settlement, spoke about the environment of tolerance that has historically existed in Azerbaijan.
According to him, although Jews have historically faced persecution in various countries around the world, representatives of different religions in Azerbaijan have lived in an atmosphere of mutual respect and harmony:
“Even during the Soviet period, when churches and mosques were closed, the doors of synagogues in Guba were not closed. We sat at the same table with Azerbaijanis and lived like brothers.”
