Introduction of compulsory medical insurance to start in Azerbaijan as from next year

Introduction of compulsory medical insurance is expected to start in Azerbaijan as from next year, Deputy Health Minister of Azerbaijan Elsever Agayev said, APA reports. The Deputy Minister said that Siyazan had been chosen as a pilot region for the compulsory medical insurance in the initial stage. The coverage of the new project may be extended next year.

Agayev said the President had approved the Health Ministry’s “Reforms for financing health sphere and conception on the introduction of compulsory insurance” and the Cabinet of Ministers approved the plan of activities for its implementation. Health Ministry and other related bodies are working in accordance with the plan of activities. Elsever Agayev said work was being done in connection with the health reforms in five pilot regions of Azerbaijan within the framework of the Primary Health Care Services Project of the World Bank. It is planned to construct 100-bed new hospitals in three regions, repair or reconstruct 35 health centers within the framework of the project.
