Chairman of Azerbaijan State Committee for Religious Associations Hidayat Orujov: â€œThe Mosque of Our Prophet Muhammad has been knocked down for being built illegallyâ€

The demolition began on April 24 with participation of Yasamal district executive office and under the control of police. The minaret of the mosque is being knocked down at present.

Head of Yasamal district religious community Mirvaleh Movsumov said the demolition was carried out without decision of court.
â€œIt contradicts both local legislation and international norms. Appeal was filed against the decision of Yasamal district court to demolish the mosque on November 28, 2008. Baku Appeals Court is considering the case and no decision has been passed yet. So, the mosque was knocked down without the court decision,â€ he said.

It was impossible to learn the position of Yasamal district executive office.

Chairman of the State Committee for Religious Associations Hidayat Orujov told APA that the Mosque of Our Prophet Muhammad had been built illegally. It was proved in all the hearings. Orujov said a part of the yard of economic University had also been captured.
â€œMoreover, architectural rules were not obeyed while building the mosque,â€ he said.

Hidayat Orujov said it was wrong to assess demolition of the mosque as a blow to tolerance.
â€œDemolition of the illegally-built mosque can not be regarded as a blow on tolerance. No one is pursued for his religious faith in this country,â€ he said.

Under 28 November resolution of Yasamal district court, the suit of Yasamal district executive office on knocking down the illegal construction was granted. According to the resolution, the non-residential building - mosque constructed in the above-mentioned place must be knocked down. Baku Appeals Court is considering the case at present.
