US President Donald Trump's administration is holding talks on a military agreement that would provide for the long-term deployment of US troops in Venezuela, The New York Times reports, citing its sources.
According to the publication, the negotiations are being led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The areas where troops would be stationed and other details are expected to be determined through subsequent agreements.
It is not yet known whether the US will build new military bases in Venezuela or use existing ones. The State Department stated that although it seeks to expand security cooperation, no negotiations regarding military bases are currently underway.
