"Hundreds of journalists from Azerbaijan are participating in the COP29 event. At the same time, despite operating illegally in the Republic of Azerbaijan, you are also present as a journalist from Radio Liberty. This indicates that the rule of law and freedom of the media are fully upheld in the Republic of Azerbaijan," Assistant to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration Hikmat Hajiyev told journalists, APA reports.
"If you are discussing someone’s arrest, let’s talk about the rule of law. There have been no cases of persecution related to these individuals’ journalistic activities. The matter at hand concerns activities outside of journalism. Being a journalist does not imply immunity from the rule of law or grant any special privileges beyond it. I can provide specific figures regarding the individuals you mentioned, which reveal significant instances of illegal financial turnover. Illegal financial operations constitute violations of several fundamental laws of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Organizations that label themselves as media outlets often overlook the fact that participating in illegal financial schemes and fraud constitutes a breach of Azerbaijani law. Regrettably, a number of resources, including Radio Liberty, engage in some show and populist propaganda under the guise of being media entities.
Therefore, if you claim to be a professional journalist, I suggest focusing on substantial and fundamental topics like climate financing. As a citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan, it is also a good quality to be able to rejoice in the achievements of your country," Hikmat Hajiyev noted.
