Syrian authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons and ammunition from the Tartus province into Lebanon.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said security forces, in coordination with intelligence agencies, carried out an operation that led to the discovery and seizure of a shipment of weapons and ammunition intended to be transported to Lebanon, APA reports.
Various types of firearms, RPG rounds and ammunition were seized during the operation.
The ministry did not provide further details about the route the smugglers planned to use to transport the shipment into Lebanon or the intended recipients of the weapons.
Syrian authorities have recently stepped up operations aimed at combating arms smuggling from the country into neighboring states.
