The US Department of Defense has provided millions of dollars in funding to universities and research institutions in Germany, including for projects with potential dual-use applications, according to German magazine Der Spiegel.
An analysis of US federal budget data by the publication found that the Pentagon had allocated a total of $20.4m (£15.2m) to projects in Germany over the past seven years.
The research funded by the US Defense Department mainly covers technology, natural sciences and medicine.
The University of Tübingen received the largest overall amount, with funding of about $1.3m.
The largest individual grant, worth $954,000, was awarded to Ruhr University Bochum.
Der Spiegel said other recipients included major German research organisations such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Fraunhofer Society for Applied Research.
