International conference on â€œFreedom of speech and media in Azerbaijan in the context of local and international lawsâ€ starts in Baku

The event is held at the initiative of Azerbaijan Freedom of Speech Protection Fund and financed by Association Bulgaria NGO. APA reports that executive director of Azerbaijan Freedom of Speech Protection Fund Mammad Nazimoglu making a keynote speech called the conference a significant event for media.
Chief of Presidentâ€™s Office socio-political department Ali Hasanov read Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyevâ€™s congratulation letter.
Following this, Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Vagif Sadikhov, Special Representative of the Council of Europe Secretary General Denis Bribosia, head of Freedom of Speech Protection Fund Musa Yagub and president of Association Bulgariaâ€™s president Rumen Popov addressed the participants.
Chairman of the Press Council Aflatun Amashov made a speech on â€œSelf-regulation of Azerbaijani mass mediaâ€.
Aflatun Amashov commenting on media situation, activity of Press Council stated that there are imprisoned journalists in Azerbaijan and underlined that the organization he chairs does not support imprisonment for expression. Mr. Amashov noted that journalists should observe ethical principles in their articles, not insult people. International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Secretary General Aydan White stated that pressures on media, murder of journalists increased in many countries within past years. Aydan White said that Russia, Turkey, Egypt, as well as Azerbaijan are among the countries where media is exerted pressure on. Aydan White said that there are problems between government and mass media in Azerbaijan. Following this, Rashid Hajili, director of the Media Rights Institute made a report on the theme â€œComparative analyses of existing laws on mass media in Azerbaijan with the laws in Western countriesâ€.
