A delegation of international travelers has visited Aghdara, APA's Karabakh bureau reports.

As part of the visit, travelers representing 13 countries, led by Charles Veley, founder of the prestigious MTP (Most Traveled People) club, visited Ganjasar Monastery, located in the village of Vangli in the Aghdara district.

The travelers were informed about the history and architectural features of the monument, illegal interventions carried out at the complex during the occupation, and related legal issues.

It was stated that Ganjasar Monastery, located on a high and picturesque plateau on the banks of the Khachinchay River, is one of the most famous monuments of Albanian architecture. Built between 1216 and 1238 on the initiative of Albanian Prince Hasan Jalal, the monastery served as the center of the Albanian Catholicosate for many centuries and as the residence of the last Albanian catholicoi until 1836.

It was noted that during the occupation, interventions were made to the architectural structure and interior of the complex, while some historical stone inscriptions, ornaments, and symbols were damaged or altered. Restoration and reconstruction work carried out in different years resulted in changes affecting the monument's original appearance.

The travelers were also informed about traces of interventions recorded during an on-site inspection of the complex in 2024, as well as the importance of primary sources, epigraphic materials, archaeological evidence, and comparative architectural analysis in determining the monument's historical and cultural affiliation.
