NATO and the EU unsuccessfully attempted to persuade Spain and Greece to transfer interceptor missiles for the American Patriot air defense systems, which are about to reach the end of their service life, to Ukraine, APA reports citing The Daily Telegraph.

According to the article, Greece has approximately 200 PAC-2 missiles, which are nearing the end of their 23-year service life. There is no precise information regarding Spain's stockpiles, but the publication notes that Madrid last month announced its willingness to transfer five missiles to Kyiv. Ukraine, however, estimates its need for interceptors at 300-360 for this winter alone.

The Daily Telegraph notes that officials involved in these negotiations prefer not to publicly name the countries in question to avoid alienating them.

The publication also reports that re-certification is required to use the missiles after their service life has expired.
