A preparatory court hearing has been held in Yekaterinburg in the case involving the head of the Azerbaijani diaspora, Shahin Shikhlinski, his son Mutvali Shikhlinski, and the Safarov brothers, APA’s Russia bureau reports.

The hearing was held behind closed doors.

The defendants and their lawyers took part in the session.

The defense lawyers requested that the case against Shikhlinski and the others be heard by a jury.

It was reported that the next court hearing will take place in January, and that a jury panel needs to be formed for the jury trial.

Note that in June this year, Russian law enforcement agencies carried out an operation against Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg. During the operation, force was used, and as a result, two Azerbaijani nationals — brothers Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov — died from the injuries they sustained. Other members of the Safarov family and several compatriots were arrested by court order.

They face charges related to crimes allegedly committed in 2001, 2010, and 2011. Subsequently, the head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in Yekaterinburg, Shahin Shikhlinski, and his son Mutvali Shikhlinski were detained. A criminal case was opened against Mutvali Shikhlinski on charges of using violence against a representative of the state, while Shahin Shikhlinski is accused of attempted contract killing and using violence against a state official.
