Daughter of last Ilisu sultan Daniyal, Sheikh Shamil’s daughter-in-law Karimat, known as “Caucasian rose” for her beauty, was buried there.

Head of the expedition Jahangir Soltanov said that after Sheikh Shamil’s surrender to tsarist Russia (August 26, 1859), Karimat Khanum lived in exile in Kaluga, Russia and died there on May 4, 1862 from tuberculosis. Karimat Khanum’s will was to bury her in her hometown – Ilisu, Zagatala province. Russian Emperor Alexander II sent Karimat Khanum’s body in crescent moon-star sarcophagus to Nukha, where her father - sultan Daniyal was living in exile, that sultan could attend the funeral of his daughter.

Soltanov said Russian Empire feared that Karimat Khanum’s tomb in Zagatala could be another symbol for local population to rise against the tsar again and therefore they urged Caucasian governor not to allow her burial in Zagatala. Archeologists, philologists were involved in expedition to research the sultana’s tomb place. All ancient cemeteries were researched in the region and her tomb was found in the ancient cemetery of Sheki. The tombstone and other materials found during the expedition were sent to Zagatala’s museum of history and ethnography.
