Cuba has accused US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of pressuring other countries to block a UN resolution calling for the lifting of Washington’s economic embargo on Havana, APA reports.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla made the allegation at a press conference in Havana.
He said Rubio had personally pressured foreign leaders for several months to discourage them from supporting Cuba.
“This pressure is being exerted personally by the US secretary of state. He has been doing this for several months, and we have evidence,” Rodríguez Parrilla said.
The minister said the UN General Assembly would again discuss a draft resolution calling for an end to the US trade, economic and financial embargo on Cuba on October 27–28. The issue will appear on the Assembly’s agenda for the 34th time.
He alleged that Washington had intensified diplomatic pressure to change the positions of countries that had supported Havana for years.
“What the United States is doing to Cuba today could be applied to any other country in the future,” he said.
Despite this, Rodríguez Parrilla expressed confidence that an overwhelming majority of countries would support the draft resolution. The vote is scheduled for October 28.
Russia is among the countries supporting the lifting of US restrictions on Cuba. Russian Ambassador to Havana Viktor Koronelli also said Washington was seeking to influence other countries’ positions.
