Journalists, human rights defenders discuss incident related to Khadija Ismayilova

Baku. Parvin Abbasov â€“ APA. Journalists and human rights defenders held a meeting at the press center of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) to discuss the incident related to the reporter of Radio Liberty Khadija Isamyilova, APA reports.

Human rights defender Arzu Abdullayeva and director of Turan news agency Mehman Aliyev condemned the incident and said they would defend Ismayilova.

Journalist Aygun Elgunash criticized the leaders of woman organizations, including Sevinj Osmangizi and Chairwoman of the Union of Women Journalists Sevil Yusifova for their indifference to the issue.

Khadija Ismayilova also attended the meeting. She said that spokesperson for the General Prosecutorâ€™s Office Eldar Sultanov, Baku cityâ€™s prosecutor Aziz Seyidov had phoned her and she has met Sultanov today: â€œI was invited to Baku city prosecutorâ€™s office. I consulted with my lawyer Adil Ismayilov and I will visit the prosecutorâ€™s office on March 17â€.

Ismayilova also expressed dissatisfaction with launching criminal investigation only on one article of the Criminal Code. In her opinion, the case must be launched on the article of interrupting the professional activity of the journalist.

Ismayilova thanked everybody who supported her and underlined that unfortunately the offices of OSCE and Council of Europe in Baku didnâ€™t express opinion on the issue.

The Union of Women Journalists issued statement condemning the intrusion into private life of Khadija Ismayilova and noted the importance of investigation of this issue.
