Baku – APA. A Seychelles minister says Somali pirates have seized a Seychelles fishing vessel with seven crew members near the Indian Ocean island nation, APA reports quoting “The Voice of America”.

Transport Minister Joel Morgan says pirates hijacked the 10-meter long boat named Faith on Friday about 440 kilometers north of Mahe, the main island of the Seychelles. In a statement Saturday, he said the fishermen were operating in the nation’s exclusive economic zone at the time.

Morgan said the pirates were heading northwest toward Somalia.

A European Union anti-piracy force says Somali pirates are holding more than 20 vessels with about 500 hostages. The pirates have greatly expanded their range in recent years as international naval forces patrol near the Somali coastline.
