At least nine people were killed in a collapse at an illegal mine in southwestern Colombia, according to Alex González, Secretary of Peace and Human Rights for the Department of Nariño, APA reports.
"Several people were reported trapped by the collapse of the mine. These people were working in the mine, and we currently have information about nine fatalities," he said on the Caracol television channel.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing at the site, hampered by the difficult terrain and security concerns. According to Caracol, the death toll could reach 12-15 people.
The mine where the gold was illegally mined is located in the municipality of Santa Barbara.
