US President Donald Trump stated that he would be prepared to tighten unilateral sanctions against Russia "at any moment" if Washington and Moscow fail to reach an agreement on Ukraine, APA reports.

"And by the way, I have the right to do that at any time. Immediately. So if it doesn't work, I can always do it," Trump said, answering reporters' questions about why he hadn't used his authority to impose new sanctions on Russia under a new law initiated by Lindsey Graham. "When you're negotiating, you don't do that," Trump noted. He explained that he was referring to US negotiations with Russia, primarily on Ukraine. The two sides are also discussing the possibility of releasing one American citizen previously detained in Russia and are cooperating on Iran, the American leader added.

Trump emphasized that his fellow Republicans are generally understanding of the decision not to implement the provisions of the law for now. "I'm conveying this to the Republicans who are opposed, and there are few of them, because they have confidence in me," the president said.
