“The issue of compensation for the colonial period is being discussed at this event," Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group, said at the international conference titled “Injustices of Belgian Colonialism and 101 Years of Struggle for Reparations,” organized by the Baku Initiative Group, APA reports.
He stated that no compensation or reparations can bring back the people who lost their lives as a result of Belgium’s colonial policies in Congo, Rwanda and Burundi in the 20th century:
“Today, despite more than 50 years having passed, we are still discussing the issues of reparations, compensation and justice. In my opinion, reparations should not consist solely of financial compensation for the suffering experienced during that period.”
Abbas Abbasov noted that reparations should not be limited solely to financial compensation for the suffering experienced in the past. According to him, reparations should also serve to address the long-term legacy of colonialism and the problems created by those policies that persist to this day.
