A panel discussion titled "COP29: Leap Forward for Belem – Accelerating Transformation" was held within the framework of the XII Global Baku Forum, APA reports.
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who made a video address at the panel discussion, said that they are ready for all cooperation to reduce methane emissions. He said that they have contributed to the release of methane emissions and emphasized that companies such as SOCAR can also make significant contributions to this process.
Former Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and former Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Rashid Alimov drew attention to the climate and financial problems that have arisen in the region after natural disasters: "Every year, Central Asian countries suffer from natural disasters, earthquakes and floods. Financialization does not address this. The increase in natural disasters is creating a debt of $ 1.5 billion in Tajikistan. 14,000 glaciers in Tajikistan have already completely melted. In Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, glaciers have decreased by 27 percent in the last twenty years. We also intend to address the problem of glaciers at COP30."
Hakima El Haite, president of Liberal International and vice-president of COP21, said that the world is focused on financing wars, while the fight against climate change is being neglected.
COP20 President Manuel Pulgar Vidal, former Peruvian Minister of Ecology, said that new mandates are needed to move the process forward at COP30: "The claims that the COP30 agenda is an anti-American agenda are populism."
COP29 High-Level Climate Champion Nigar Arpadarai noted in her panel speech that Azerbaijan is ready to do its best to help develop a roadmap for COP30: "Small and medium-sized enterprises are lagging behind in the transition to green energy. They are trying to protect their own businesses rather than save the planet. Therefore, it is important to support small and medium-sized enterprises in this process."
