Chairman: Azerbaijan’s geographical position creates opportunities to connect infrastructure across broader region

“Azerbaijan’s geographical position between Central Asia, the Caspian region, Türkiye and Europe creates an opportunity to connect renewable energy resources, markets and infrastructure across the broader region,” Javid Abdullayev, Chairman of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy, said during the panel session titled “Developing the Green Energy Industry through Innovation, Digital Technologies and Regional Cooperation” at the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) conference of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports.

He said Azerbaijan is not limited to producing green electricity within the country: “Together with our regional partners, we are working on creating green energy corridors that will enable the transmission of renewable energy across the region.

One of the main initiatives is the Caspian–Black Sea–Europe Green Energy Corridor. In December 2022, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary signed an agreement on strategic partnership in the development and transmission of green energy.

At the same time, work is also underway to expand green energy connections to Eastern Europe via the Caspian Sea.

Within the framework of COP29, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed an agreement on strategic partnership in the development and transmission of green energy. This laid the foundation for the Central Asia–Azerbaijan Green Energy Corridor.

This corridor is of strategic importance because it creates an opportunity to connect Central Asia’s vast renewable energy potential with Azerbaijan and, through Azerbaijan, with broader regional and European markets.

We are also working on developing energy connections in the direction of Türkiye. The Azerbaijan–Nakhchivan–Türkiye energy interconnector aims to integrate the energy infrastructure of Azerbaijan and Türkiye and create opportunities for the export of renewable electricity to Nakhchivan.

Another important initiative is the Azerbaijan–Georgia–Türkiye–Bulgaria Green Energy Corridor. Within this framework, the energy ministries of the four countries signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of global electricity transmission and trade.

This initiative further strengthens the regional framework for cross-border renewable energy connections. All these initiatives demonstrate a broader vision. We see these corridors as part of a larger regional green energy network. Together, they can connect Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Türkiye and Europe and enable the transmission of renewable energy across the region.”
