Japan logs biggest ever trade deficit in January

Baku - APA-Economics. Japan marked its biggest ever trade deficit of 1,475 billion yen ($18.6 billion) in January as exports slowed further on a combination of the strong yen and a gloomier outlook for the global economy in the wake of the sovereign debt crisis in Europe, the government said Monday, Mainichi Daily News reported.

The deficit, the largest among comparable data available since 1979, suggests the economy is under more serious pressure than it was at the height of the global financial turmoil triggered by the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in September 2008. The figure topped the previous record of 967.9 billion yen logged in January 2009.
