# 10 May 2010 08:58 (UTC +04:00)
The statement was released by the Azerbaijani American Council. The organization is reminding that established in the 18th century by Panah-Ali Khan Javanshir Ziyadoglu as a capital of the independent Karabakh khanate, Shusha became a cradle of Azerbaijani Turkic culture, literature and music.

Over the years, the memory of Shusha remained a fundamental part of contemporary Azerbaijani identity, and the Azerbaijani-American Council seeks to fulfill its mission by raising awareness of Azerbaijani historical and cultural heritage.

The council calls upon all friends of Azerbaijan, U.S. public officials and media to denounce the occupation and ethnic cleansing of Shusha and other occupied regions of Azerbaijan.

The ongoing military occupation of Karabakh by Armenian forces not only imperils the rich cultural heritage of the Caucasus, but also jeopardizes any peace prospects in the region, the council said, calling for establishing peace not only in Azerbaijan but in the whole region.
