"The US and the European Union are trying to keep Georgia in their orbit of influence and pull Armenia in," Head of the Russian General Staff Valery Gerasimov said at a briefing for foreign military attaches, APA's Moscow correspondent reports.
According to him, the situation in the South Caucasus remains complex: "The desire of non-regional players, primarily the United States and the European Union, to strengthen their positions in the region, to retain Georgia, and to draw Armenia into their orbit of influence is having a devastating effect on its development."
Gerasimov stressed that the West is trying to destabilize the situation by financing and directing the protests in Georgia: “These attempts demonstrate an interest in involving the country in active anti-Russian actions on the Ukrainian scenario. In contrast to the destructive actions of the West, Russia is taking constructive measures in this region,” the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces noted.
