Azerbaijan intends to implement green energy projects with a total capacity of 2 GW by 2027, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Francesco La Camera said during his speech at the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, APA reports.
The IRENA Director-General said that Azerbaijan has placed renewable energy at the center of its national priorities.
“I would like to commend Azerbaijan for placing renewable energy at the center of its national priorities. The country has the ambition to implement 2 gigawatts of green energy projects by 2027,” the IRENA chief emphasized.
He noted that a record 692 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity was created worldwide in 2025: “By the end of 2025, the share of renewable energy sources reached 49% of global installed electricity capacity. The transition to renewable energy is not only accelerating but also strengthening the security and resilience of energy systems. The energy transition is no longer only a climate necessity. It is both an economic and a strategic necessity,” he said.
According to him, the energy transition is not limited only to increasing renewable energy capacity. Investments in electricity grids, energy storage systems, digitalization, and system flexibility should be increased in order to build more resilient, flexible, and secure energy systems.
The IRENA chief said that the energy systems built during this decade will determine countries’ climate outcomes, economic competitiveness and strategic resilience for decades to come.
He noted that recent developments in the Middle East have demonstrated how quickly disruptions in energy markets can affect economies, industries and households.
“The security of an energy system is closely linked to the extent to which it is exposed to disruptions beyond its control,” Francesco La Camera added.
