Baku. Vahab Rzayev - APA-Economics. The Dow Jones closed at 8,451.19, down 1.49 per cent, after a day of volatile trading on Wall Street.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw early losses of as much as 700 points minutes after opening before recovering to 8225.4, down 353.8, by late afternoon.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq managed a slim gain of 4.39 points (0.27 percent) to 1,649.51 and the Standard & Poorâ€™s 500 index dropped 9.97 points (1.10 percent) to 899.95, based on provisional closing figures.
Some global markets plunged as much as 10 percent before partial recoveries.
The Russell 2000 rose 23.28, or 4.66 percent, to 522.48. For the week, the Russell fell 96.92, or 15.64 percent.
Decliners led advancers 2-to-1 on the New York Stock Exhange, where consolidated volume came to a record 11.2 billion shares, compared with 8.14 billion traded Thursday.
European stocks sank Friday, with Britainâ€™s FTSE-100 falling 8.85 percent, Germanâ€™s DAX declining 7.01 percent, and Franceâ€™s CAC-40 ending down 7.73 percent. In Asia, the collapse of Japanâ€™s Yamato Life Insurance caused already nervous investors to pull even more money out of the market â€” the Nikkei 225 fell 9.6 percent.
