Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was the one who persuaded Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei to agree to negotiations with the United States, The New York Times reports, citing Iranian officials.

According to the sources, Pezeshkian warned that Iran's economy was on the verge of collapse due to the U.S. naval blockade and that he would resign if Iran did not agree to negotiations with the United States.

In addition, the governor of the Central Bank said that Iran could face shortages of food and medicine within weeks.

Following this, Khamenei agreed to the negotiations.

However, he said that he was fundamentally opposed to an agreement with the United States and would only agree if the Supreme National Security Council approved it.

It should be noted that the Islamabad Memorandum was signed on June 17 following negotiations between the United States and Iran.

The parties decided to continue negotiations to sign a final agreement.
