"We liberated our territories from Armenian occupation, restored justice and our dignity," President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said at the opening of the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, APA reports.
"Throughout the 35 years of our independence, we have always believed that we would achieve our goals. For the vast majority of these years, our main goal was to restore our territorial integrity and liberate Azerbaijani lands occupied by Armenia. As many of you know, negotiations conducted over many years yielded no results. In fact, the negotiation format was structured in such a way that resolving the conflict was not envisaged; on the contrary, the plan was to freeze it. Apparently, there was a consensus on this issue among the world's leading powers. However, their miscalculation concerned only what the Azerbaijani people thought and what plans the Azerbaijani government had. We did not intend to remain an occupied country, a people whose fundamental human rights were violated forever. We participated in the negotiations with complete sincerity and hope. However, when we saw that this process was leading nowhere, we decided to resolve the issue, taking into account our legitimate rights, including the UN Charter and the right to self-defense enshrined in Article 51.
We defended ourselves, defeated the enemy, liberated our territories that had been under Armenian occupation for 32 years, restored justice, restored our dignity, and fulfilled the requirements of international law. By doing so, we ourselves implemented the UN Security Council resolutions adopted in 1993, which demanded the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian troops from our territories. However, those resolutions had remained on paper for 30 years," the head of state noted.
