Only 11–12% of irrigated areas in Azerbaijan are currently served by modern irrigation systems, Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov said during a roundtable discussion on “Climate-Resilient Agribusiness: Aligning Strategy, Investment, and Policy” held as part of Baku Climate Action Week, APA reports.
“We are working to implement efficient and modern irrigation technologies. In my view, 11–12% is not enough for the use of modern irrigation methods. In the future, we aim to increase this figure to 100%,” the minister said.
Majnun Mammadov also outlined the Ministry of Agriculture’s main strategy regarding climate change:
“In the context of climate change, sustainability must be ensured both socially and economically. Farmers’ welfare must be secured, and activities that generate economic benefits for the state should be carried out. Increasing farmers’ incomes is one of the Ministry of Agriculture’s main objectives. Climate resilience lies at the heart of our agricultural strategy. In addition to soil, water, and financial resources, human resources are also very important. In this regard, educating farmers, training professional specialists, improving farmer groups, and instilling the ability to use modern technologies are among our top priorities,” the minister emphasized.
